Wide variety of Kidney cells

The kidney is one of the most complex organs. It contains a wide variety of epithelial and endothelial cells in the different regions; according to the latest findings, 16 to 26 cell types are assumed, of which 16 are epithelial and the rest are distributed among endothelial, immune and interstitial cells. Some of these cell types are available from us and can be used in 2D or together with our 3D tools. In combination with our special media, such as the chemically defined Renal Epithelial Cell Growth Medium, all paths are open for genomics and proteomics.

Chronic kidney disease has been recognized as one of the leading health problems worldwide.

Understanding the variety of cells and their connected interplay is paramount for scientists treating patients with kidney failure. This interplay helps promote the kidneys vital functions of maintaining the balance of electrolytes, water and ion homeostasis, while also regulating blood pressure, secreting hormones and filtering and eliminating waste products.

The ideal treatment for kidney failure is kidney transplantation but with limited availability there is a high demand for new therapies.

There have already been some breakthroughs in the in vitro creation of small organoids of self-assembled kidney tissue from pluripotent stem cells.

In order to further advance treatments for both clinical and regenerative medicine and for example to develop and maintain more mature tissues for transplantation there is a greater understanding needed of the large variety of renal cells, their lineage and their functionality.
