PELOAcademy | Animals in the (Petri) dish: Towards a truly animal-free laboratory
Presented by Tilo Weber, Deutscher Tierschutzbund e.V./Academy for Animal Welfare of the German Animal Welfare Federation
Accurate laboratory results are crucial for cell cultures but are hindered by undefined, animal-derived materials like fetal bovine serum, Accutase, and Matrigel. These pose reproducibility, safety, and ethical challenges.
This talk highlights these issues and presents animal-free alternatives to enhance reliability and reproducibility in cell and tissue cultures.

PELOAcademy | Human Respiratory Tissue Models to study Odorant Metabolism
Presented by Dr. rer. nat. Maria Steinke, UK Würzburg, Klinik+Poliklinik für HNO-Krankheiten, plastische+ästhetische Operationen; Fraunhofer-Institut für Silicatforschung ISC, Translationszentrum f. Reg. Therapien, Würzburg
Nasal xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes (XMEs) are important for the sense of smell. They protect the nasal tissue from potentially harmful volatile compounds and can influence odorant availability and quality. We cultured primary nasal epithelial cells and fibroblasts at the air-liquid interface to obtain three-dimensional human respiratory tissue models.

Clostridium histolyticum Collagenases
Presented by Bob McCarthy, President & Co-Founder VitaCyte, Indianapolis, USA
C. histolyticum collagenases were first employed in the early 1960s for the purpose of cell isolation. However, the majority of users have a limited understanding of the manner in which these enzymes facilitate the dissociation of tissue. The webinar will review an enhanced comprehension of purified collagenase-protease enzyme mixtures by applying knowledge of collagenase structure-function. This knowledge led to the development of a practical model for understanding collagenase-protease-mediated tissue dissociation. The model led to several new insights that improved the use of collagenases in cell isolation.

PELOAcademy | A new threat in Cell Culture: Cross-Contamination of Cell Lines
Presented by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Gstraunthaler, Institut für Physiologie der Medizinischen Universität Innsbruck, emer
Cross-contamination is the erroneous contamination of a given culture with unrelated cells of another cell line, either from the same species (intra-species contamination) or with cells from another species (inter-species contamination).
When the contaminant is a rapidly dividing cell line (e.g., HeLa cells), it can overgrow and replace the original cell culture very soon, within a few passages. In earlier times, due to the widespread use of animal cell lines, inter-species contaminations were most common.
